Hayden 1864

     Dear mother,
I have done a horrible deed. General Sherman forced my regiment and I to march on Atlanta. We burned the city to the ground and pillaged everything. Not only that, but General Sherman forced us to leave all of our food and equipment and march all the way to the sea. This forced us to steal everything we needed to survive, from nearby towns and villages. We were ordered to burn everything else. We have destroyed many lives these past few months. Can you forgive me? No. The real question I should be asking is.... Can I forgive myself.
